‘Holy Motherhood’ is characteristic of paintings in Gotch’s best-known style, which is evocative of 15th century religious paintings and often showed a mother and child or young girls dressed in rich drapery, all posed in a static, frontal arrangement. Completed in 1902, this painting now hangs in the Laing Art Gallery, in Tyne & Wear.
