Clausen was born in London and studied at South Kensington School of Art and at the Académie Julien in Paris. He was a painter of rural subjects and landscapes, but also painted portraits, interiors, nudes, murals and occasionally allegories. Influenced by the French artist, Bastien-Lepage, he did much to promote this artist’s work in England. He was knighted in 1927.
