Born at Unterhauser, Thuringia, Germany 1891. He was profoundly affected by his First World War experiences on the Russian and Western Fronts. He returned to a confused post war Germany and painted contemporary themes with an impartial and almost unbearable truthfulness. ‘Portrait of the journalist Sylvia Von Harden’ (1926) is a portrait full of presence, with a graphic use of colour. Died at Hemmenhofen, Germany 1969.
