A painter of portraits, genre, landscapes and townscapes, he was also a textile designer and decorator. Born in Blackburn, Lancashire, he studied at the Manchester School of Art, the RCA, the City and Guilds School in Kensington, the Académie Julien and the Atelier Colarossi in Paris. During the First World War he served in Egypt, Gallipoli and Palestine, later exhibiting works he had painted there. His work ranges from desert war scenes to broadly painted views of London streets and is marked by its direct realism, tonal control and technique.
