Hughes was a gentle, modest man who had a conventional art training but became a passionate convert to Pre-Raphaelitism. ‘Ophelia’ is a hauntingly atmospheric image with only the foreground in sharply-focused detail. The space behind Ophelia is left misty and unclear. The intense, glowing colour scheme of purples and greens gives the picture its character.
