Piet Mondrian

Born in 1872, the Dutch painter Mondrian was a key figure in the development of abstract art. His early painting was quite naturalsitic but in the late 1890s he began to experiment with abstraction. Mondrian died in 1944, and his work had a profound influence on decorative and advertisement art from the 1930s onwards.
