GRI001 Midsummer Night, 1876
£9.00 – £35.00
John Atkinson Grimshaw
Born Leeds, England, 1836, Grimshaw was a clerk for the Great Northern Railway when he started to study painting. A prolific artist, he became noted for works lit by moonlight or lamplight. From 1867 he painted fairy pictures such as ‘Spirit of the Night’, abundant with detail and lurid chromatic effects. Like Degas, he enjoyed an early use of photographs for reference and analysis. He mainly worked for private patrons and his popularity led to his work being copied and faked. Died Leeds, England, 1893.
